Michael was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in Victoria in 1976, and was first called to the NSW Bar in 2005. Michael was in general practice in Launceston from 2010-2014.

In a diverse and interesting career, including naval service and specialising in his core discipline of Public International Law, Michael has practised in both the public and private sectors. He has extensive leadership and management experience in senior executive and administrative appointments.

He holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Melbourne in Law and Arts (Economics and Politics); and post-graduate degrees from the University of Sydney, Master of Laws;  and The  London School of Economics and Political Science, Doctor of Philosophy.  He holds the rank of Commodore in the Royal Australian Navy, and served as the Director General of the Defence Legal Service. 

Michael is the Convenor of RPN Public International Law Chambers.
