Matthew was admitted to practice in April 2006. Matthew has significant experience in Family Law and Child Protection and for the last 17 years has practised almost exclusively in those areas.

Matthew worked in private practice in the ACT from 2006 until 2013 as a solicitor advocate in the Family Law Jurisdiction and Children’s Courts. From 2013, Matthew commenced appearing in trial/contest work, with the Northern Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA). He appeared in the Family Court, Federal Circuit Court, the NT Children’s Court, and the Supreme Court of the NT in Appeals.

In 2015 Matthew joined Victoria Legal Aid from NAAJA, as In-House Counsel. Matthew regularly appeared as Counsel in interlocutory matters, VCAT reviews, contests in the Children’s and Magistrate’s Court, County Court, and Supreme Court of Victoria and in Child protection and Family Violence matters, including appeals. Matthew regularly appeared in Final Hearings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court and in the Appeals Division of the Family Court and in the Supreme Court of Victoria. Matthew has conducted several multi day advocacy training workshops for young lawyers and conducted moots for the ANU PLT program. Matthew has been providing ad hoc advice to individual lawyers in relation to case management, including litigation preparation advice and case planning work.
