Matthew was admitted to practice in 1995 as an employed lawyer in Devonport. In 2003 he commenced his own firm and remained as a principal until November 2021 when he went to the Bar. Throughout that time he practiced initially in criminal and civil litigation after which he practiced mainly in family law and child protection matters.

Matthew has a strong commitment of service to the profession and the administration of justice. He served for 10 years as a member of the Council of the Law Society of Tasmania including 2 years as President. He served as a Director of the Law Council of Australia.

Matthew was a long time member of the former Mental Health Tribunal, Deputy President of the (former) Guardianship and Administration Board and then a Senior member of TasCAT. He retirned from TasCAT in December 2022. He is currently a Commissioner of the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania.

In addition to his experience appearing as Counsel for parties, Matthew has extensive experience as an Independent Children’s Lawyer and Separate Representative appointed in matters throughout Tasmania. He accepts briefs to act for parties in family law matters from around the state and interstate.

Outside of the practice of the law, Matthew enjoys getting out into the environment of the North West and East Coasts and spending time with his 2 boisterous Airedale Terriers.
